Buying an airplane is a common goal; lots of avid fliers look for an airplane for sale online or in print publications. When buying an airplane, there are many factors to keep in mind, including the price.

Choosing a plane

Every airplane is different, and when you are shopping around for that perfect set of wings, you’ll want to evaluate many aspects of the craft.

Hardware and overall engineering is important; airplane buyers choose between propeller-driven planes or other crafts with jet engines.

Wing span, positioning and landing gear type are other features that those looking at airplanes for sale will look at in determining what kind of purchase is right for them.

Some planes also have additional features such as advanced fuel tank design or special controls.

Joint ownership is a powerful tool in the belt of those who want to get into the air. Joint ownership of an airplane helps with the paperwork issue, as clubs can function as a “hub” for dealing with the issues of ownership particular to large vehicle acquisitions. Joint ownership is also a less risky investment and easier on personal finances, and still allows amateur pilots to go up in the air when they are able to fit it into their schedules.

As a student at Michigan State University I continued pursuing an aviation career through the MSU Flying Club known as “The Winged Spartans”. Since those days many universities have instituted full time aviation programs to train new generations of commercial and business aviation pilots and aviation managers. With the rising cost of fuel these programs are getting more and more expensive. As a result enrollment in some of these programs is declining, which in time could lead to a shortage of pilots and business aviation professionals.

However, there is some good news. If you are a student at one of the member schools of the University Aviation Association then you are eligible to apply for a scholarship which will be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. To find out if your school is a member you can go to the University Aviation Association web site and find out who the members are.

The Alan H. Conklin Business Aviation Management Scholarship is sponsored by Conklin & de Decker, and will award $ 6,375.00 to a student who is officially enrolled in an aviation management program at one of the UAA member schools. Applications must be completed and submitted with all required documents postmarked no later than August 1, 2008.

This scholarship will be awarded to any U.S. citizen or permanent resident without regard to sex, race, religion or national origin. This scholarship is one of several scholarships offered by the National Business Aircraft Association (NBAA) to promote the professional development of business aviation careers. In 2007 Conklin & de Decker, along with the NBAA, established this scholarship to benefit undergraduates pursuing a career in business aviation management.

For more than 60 years Al Conklin, a U.S. Air Force veteran, was a business aviation leader through his experience as an aircraft salesman early in his career and his later work in proving the economic value of aircraft to businesses. In the 1970s he published the Aircraft Cost Evaluator with Bill de Decker, and later founded Conklin & de Decker, an aviation information company that provides aircraft performance and operating cost data for current and potential business aircraft owners.

American Airlines is one of the major carriers in the United States, serving both domestic and international destinations. The airline acquired naming rights to an arena that is situated in downtown Dallas, Texas. The arena is fully owned by the city of Dallas.

Make no mistake the US stock market is in crisis mode and some of America’s greatest companies have lost almost all of their shareholder’s value. One industry that is getting hit hard is the airline industry, no, not as bad as the banking sector, but still things are pretty devastating considering the last few years of turbulence due to ultra-high fuel costs.

And as if that was not bad enough there are back-orders for the most fuel-efficient aircraft and the Boeing Company is having yet another huge labor dispute and mechanics strike. While everyone was watching the bank stocks tank and investment banks fail, the airline industry was busy getting hammered also, but not everyone was even watching.

It appears that US Airways, which tried for a merger last year had slipped below two-dollars in July of 2008 and climbed back up for a bit of altitude only to fall again back during the massive sell-off and crash of the stock market in October of 2008. It’s been widely predicted that there would be several bankruptcies in the airline sector in 2008 and with all the losses and tightened credit it appears this prediction will come true.

Even with fuel costs coming down in October of 2008, which helps ease the losses and produce profits, investors are scared and running from airline stocks. Of course, all airline stocks have been hit lately. American, Northwest, and Delta Airlines also experienced sell-offs, many of these stocks had lost 75% or more. Indeed, the Airlines are just one victim of the financial crisis. Please consider this.

They say what goes up must come down, but some aeronautical engineers are accepting the equivalent of the Airborne DARPA Challenge. In fact, three different companies will compete using different designs that they have developed. And just think we will not know the winner for 5-years; who knows by then someone may come up with a plane, or flying craft that can stay aloft in the Earth’s atmosphere for 100-years or more?

So, How long was the world’s longest airplane flight, you ask?”

According to one website that maintains such records, two men in a Cessna 172 Skyhawk stayed up in the air without landing for 64 days 22 hours 19 minutes and 5 seconds. At the Cessna’s speed is about 6-times around the Earth. The aircraft was re-fueled in-flight and they grabbed food and water from a fast moving car using a hook, no kidding. Of course, for this DARPA contest, they aircraft will be robotic and it will not be allowed to re-fuel in flight, so it must use other forms of power, like solar for instance.

What was the Longest Balloon Flight?

Well perhaps you will remember millionaire Steve Fossett and his round the world flight in 2002 in a ballon, that was an “epic journey lasting 14 days 19 hours and 51 minutes and covering 20,602 miles or 32,963 km.” He actually finished the circumnavigation almost a day earlier, but due to the winds was unable to land. A private pilot license can be obtained in the U.S. as long as you’re over 16 and can pass a Physical- a basic license allows you to fly single-engine aircraft. You can upgrade to a commercial or professional license as you continue on your quest. Here’s how to get a private pilot license:

You must be 16 or over and speak and read English fluently. Training requires fluency in English because it is the universal language used by all the world control towers and airports.

Do some research about flying lessons. Contact local aviation schools. Some local County airports have schools.

After finding a school that fits your needs and budget, enroll in the licensed flight training classes. flight school can cost around $6,000 for all the training including ground school and flight training.

As mentioned in my opening statement, a physical and medical certificate will be needed from a doctor that is qualified to perform an pilot physical. This will ensure you’re healthy enough to fly. If you don’t know where to go, the flight school should be able to help.
Ground school can take about 3 to 5 weeks.

After you have completed your ground school course work, you will need to sit for the FAA written test. The test is multiple choice. and you may need to find a test provider?
Flight training is next. 30-40 hours with an instructor. Your school should be able to provide access to a plane.

Perform a solo flight.

The final test is performed by an FFA certified examiner. the tester will ask you questions and go with on a flight to assess your skills. Once you pass the final test, you will be private pilot license holder with a visual flight rating (VFR) so you can fly a single engine aircraft at day or night in good visibility conditions.

Obtaining a private pilot license is hard but doable. Pick a good school, flight training is only as good as the teaching staff.

Airbus A380 is the largest passenger plane in the series and the first large-capacity aircraft with two full bridges for passengers. The plane is cvadrimotor and provides long-courier flights of up to 15,200 km. Each deck has two corridor, is certified for operations up to 880 passengers (typically will carry between 420 and 620). The first company operating this model is Singapore Airlines.

The plane was built to ensure high-capacity flights on major routes between major nodes (and very congested) of major airlines. Covers a market niche, most airlines have no need for such a large capacity for their services. In early’90, there were 3 studies for such a project, one of Boeing product called VLCT, one product called McDonnell Douglas MD-12 and Airbus A3XX product. Due to market very low, which could not sustain more than one manufacturer, but also because of the Asian crisis of 1997 others have been withdrawn (and McDonnell Douglas being acquired by Boeing), Airbus remains the only manufacturer on the market.

The model chosen by noting the existence of two overlapping floors, and was named A380 (8 is a lucky number in Asia but representing the two floors and overlapping). Until the first flight, which took place on 18 January 2005, the development of the aircraft cost 11 billion euros.

After the first flight, however, production was hit by numerous difficulties, which led to the postponement of delivery plane over two years because of problems related to aircraft cabling (which were due to the use of two incompatible versions of software), weight problems, the wings didn’t pass the resistance test and the problems generated by suppliers. Thus, There were three delays, the first aircraft to be delivered from early 2006, was delivered to only 15 in September 2007 by Singapore Airlines, making the first race on the Singapore-Sydney route.

The plane was thought to carry 555 passengers in a 3-class configuration or 853 in a configuration with a single class. The structures were designed to be used on a cargo version, and a longer version (A380-900) (which, if they were produced, would carry up to 960 passengers). Provide a capacity of 100 places higher than the nearest plane that size – Boeing 747. It is the largest aircraft manufactured in series, the only plane bigger than Airbus, was Antonov An-225, but that was produced in a single copy.

The plane has 165 orders and 42 options. To be profitable, director of Airbus has estimated that with the delays, the plane needs a minimum of 420 orders, but that Airbus hopes to sell at least 700 such planes in the coming 25 years. There are 14 buyers, of which the largest is the Emirates with 55 orders. List price is between 296 and 316 million U.S. dollars, but in general offered discounts of between 15 and 50%, according to tradition in the field.

Currently only one model is offered the passenger A380-800. In the past, a cargo model has been offered for courier operations, but delays have led to massive cancellation of the two orders taken, and putting the project on the dead line (it was delayed by 10 years).
